Coffee Pick Up Lines

If you are anything like me, you always dreamed you would meet your future Significant Other in a coffeehouse.

I dreamed we would order the same drink at the cash register and then we would smile when our eyes met.  From that moment on, we would be curious of the other and we would spend hours getting to know each other at that same coffeehouse.

Coffee Proposal
Our next dates would be filled with laughter and coffee. Soon, we would visit each others homes for the holidays.

He then would ask me to marry him with a coffee proposal and we would have the perfect coffee wedding.

We would then spend the rest of our lives waking up to coffee in the morning and filling our veins with caffeine.

However, if you are anything like me, you also struggle at beginning a conversation with a "crush."

No need to fear!!! I have created a list of pickup lines for every coffee lover out there:

If you were ground coffee, you'd be espresso. Cause you're so fine.

I love the way you espresso yourself

You mocha me crazy

The barista may have forgotten your name, but I sure haven't

My coffee is really hot, but you're hotter!

I can feel something brewing between the two of us

I've been thinking about you a latte

You've turned me down before, but I'm asking for an extra shot

Do you believe in love at first sip...Or should I take another

Hey, wanna grab coffee and talk about your religious and political views

My coffee is steaming up my glasses...Or is that you

Hold the sugar please, you're sweet enough for the both of us

Java Number I can call you at

We should get some coffee...because I'm liking you a latte

Conclusion

There is no proof these pickup lines will help you get a Significant Other.

If anything your best bet is to be your awesome self (although these pickup lines might help to show your awesome personality)!!!

Other Uses Of Coffee

The first thing I think about in the morning is my to-do list I need to finish for the day. Most generally this list involved the mountains of homework I need to finish and the cleaning I need to complete.

After I get done thinking about my to-do list, my mind jumps to the beautiful cup of coffee I will enjoy at breakfast.

I knew coffee had many purposes: it helps me connect with others, it helps to keep me awake through the day and it is the best drink to have at every meal.

However, you can use coffee for more than just something you can drink and here is the list to prove it:

Air Freshener

If you are anything like me, you love the smell of coffee more than life itself (a little bit of an exaggeration; however, it is an accurate exaggeration).  The good news is coffee can eliminate odors and make your place smell like a fresh pot of coffee everyday.  It even works in small spaces like your fridge and car.

I'm sure it could even exterminate the smell of sweaty gym clothes.

Helps Composting

Coffee grounds are rich with phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and copper.  As the grounds begin to degrade they release nitrogen into the soil. This is great for speeding up the process of composting.   In fact, gardeners swear by adding coffee grounds to their compost piles.

Exfoliates Skin

Exfoliating your skin helps to get rid of the dead skin on your face. However, instead of purchasing an expensive cream you can find a DIY scrub that uses coffee. The coffee will help to smooth and tighten your skin, while the grounds help to get rid of the dead skin.

Touch Up Furniture Scratches

Nothing is more saddening than when you get a scratch on your wood furniture.  However, coffee can help solve the problem.    Mix a little bit of instant coffee and hot water into a damp paste.  Then rub it onto the scratch and watch it disappear.

Shiny Hair

Coffee is often suggested as a natural treatment to help your hair become extra shiny. Brew up an extra strong pot of coffee and let it cool. Then apply it to your dry hair.  Leave it in your hair for twenty minutes and then rinse it out.

Pest Repellent

If you are tired of pests getting into your plants or garden, here is a new solution for you: sprinkle used coffee grounds around the area.  This will protect your plants from ants, snails and slugs.

Cat Repellent
It can also keep cats away from your plants. Sprinkle coffee grounds and orange peels where you don't want them to walk.

Clean The Fireplace

Sometimes it can be hard to sweep the ashes from your fireplace. If you are having a hard time just add some damp coffee grounds to the pile and sweep it away.

Conclusion

Coffee is so much more than a beverage--it can be used as a household items, gardening supplies and beauty products.

Comment below if you have any other uses for coffee.

How Often Should You Clean Your Coffee Mug

We are all guilty of not washing our coffee mug on a daily basis.

Sometimes we are too busy in the morning and we only have time to get a gulp of the luscious drink (coffee). Other times we are too lazy and we don't feel like washing the cup until tomorrow (or next day or the day after that or when we finally make time to clean).

However, there is science to back our laziness.

A Washington Post article claims, "it’s fine to never wash your mug, as long as you’re not sharing it with anybody else. Better than fine, in fact: It may actually be the most sanitary option."

How Is This Possible?

Before you go into a caffeine shock, you should know that there are some "caveats" to this information.

First, this only applies if you do not share mug. Jeffery Starke, an infectious-disease expert and a pediatrics professor at Baylor College of Medicine, says “If I went and cultured the average unwashed coffee cup, of course I’m going to find germs...But remember the vast majority came from the person who used the cup.”

Therefore, never, under any circumstances, should you ever give your nasty, unclean coffee mug to anyone on this planet. All you are doing is sharing your nasty germs and no one wants that.

Second, you cannot have leftover cream and sugar in the cup for long periods of time.  Because when you leave cream and sugar in a mug for a weekend, things begin to grow in the mug. And then you have to wash your mug out until you feel comfortable drinking from it (and that could take a awhile).

Don't Clean It At The Office

Another rule to follow: don't wash your coffee mug at the office.

Letting your coffee mug sit in its filth is more sanitary than cleaning it with the communal sponge in the office kitchen.
A typical office sponge

"“The sponge in the break room probably has the highest bacteria count of anything in the office,” Starke said in the article.

Conclusion

As you can see, you can still be lazy about cleaning your coffee mug. Just be smart about cleaning and sharing with others.

The Science Behind Spilt Coffee

It happens to me every day in the dining hall.

I get my cup of coffee and I start walking to my table; when all of the sudden my beautiful beverage begins to spills. It begins to sway back and forth and spill on to the floor (and sometimes if I am having a bad day, it will spill onto my shoe).  Yet, not only does it spill on the floor but it begins to burn my hand.

Every time this happens I think to myself, why does this happen? How can I stop it from happening to me?

The struggle of spilling your coffee

I ultimately resort to holding the coffee cup further from my body. However, I knew there had to be some science behind it (I mean there is science for everything).

So I looked it up on the internet and sure enough there are scientists that have research this topic.  They believe they have discovered reasons for why we spill our coffee and ways in which we can lessen the likely hood of spilling large amounts of coffee.

*Warning: this blog post may contain some highly educational big science words. The blogger will do her best to provide resources to understand the material. The Experiment

In 2011, Rouslan Krechetnikov, a mechanical engineer at the University of California and his graduate assistant, Hans Mayer,  were at a fluids dynamics conference when they noticed the participants were having a hard time carrying their coffee without spilling it. They realized that this everyday problem could be an opportunity for an experiment; however, the physics was not easy.

From the beginning of the experiment, they realized that the spillage depended on a person's ability to walk.  And a person's ability to walk depends on different variables: their age, health, gender and variables.

They then realized that "science of sloshing" was another key variable to their research.   However, this science depends on the complexity of accelerations, torques, and forces.

To perform the experiment,  Krechetnikov and Mayer asked a volunteer to walk at different speeds along a straight path with a filled coffee mug in hand.

According to a sciencemag article, "The volunteer did this in one of two ways-either focusing on the coffee mug, or looking straight ahead. A camera recorded the person's motion and the mug's trajectory, while a tiny sensor on the mug recorded the instant of spillage."

The Insights

Their discovery showed that a fluid has a natural frequency that is produced due to the size of the cup.   This means that just a person walking, without any form of interference, is going to make coffee "oscillate," or swing back and forth, in the container.

They found that there were three key factors to spilling: the amount of the liquid, the size of the cup and the speed in which a person is walking.

How To Prevent The Catastrophe

We may not be able to stop this horrifying situation (the spilling of the coffee); however, science has found ways to lessen the amount of coffee spilled.

First, you can begin by walking slower. Instead of speed walking to your location slow down The slower the acceleration the better.

Second, decrease the amount of the liquid in your container. (But who really wants to decrease their coffee intake?)

Third, hold your cup with a "claw" grip. This is when you grip the rim of the cup from above. Jiwon Han, a South Korean physics student, performed similar research as Krechetnikov and Mayer . However, he learned that using the "claw" grip lessens the movement of a person's wrist, which then reduces the oscillation of the liquid.

The "claw" grip

Fourth, Han also suggest getting a coffee beverage that has more foam, such as a latte.  In a Washington Post article, he says the foam is very effective at dampening the oscillation of the liquid.

Finally, you can also use a lid on your cup in order to help prevent yourself from spilling your coffee.

Conclusion

It might seem strange there is science that goes into spilling your coffee or that physicists actually perform research on this topic. However, their research is influencing more than just coffee drinkers.

Jiwon Han said that his research has applications in other aspects of society.  For example, he believes his findings will help to prevent oil from spilling in a fuel truck.

So when you go back to work on Monday, you can now impress your coworkers with your knowledge on the science behind spilled coffee.

The Best Gifts Around

It's the most wonderful time of the year!!!!

We are still recovering from our Thanksgiving feast and now we are trying to find the perfect gifts for our friends and family.

Sometimes it can be hard to find that perfect gift. There are so many ideas you can pick from.  You can get them something sensible, like socks or a toothbrush. Or you can get them something sentimental, like a picture or a blanket with their picture on it.  Or you can get them something funny like a whoopee cushion or that one game where you smash a person's face with whip cream.  Or you can get them something edible, like chocolate or anything food related.  Or you can get them something wearable, like a classic rock shirt or new shoes.

As you can see, the list can go on and on.

But this blog post is here to help save you from unneeded necessary holiday stress.

I have learned over the years that the best gift is a coffee mug.

There are so many reasons why coffee mugs are the best gifts. First, mugs are versatile. With a mug you can drink coffee or tea, eat soup, make brownies or scramble eggs. Second, there is a coffee mug for every personality.  Finally, they can be cost efficient.  If you use a coffee mug three times a week for a year, you will definitely get your money's worth.

I have compiled a list of coffee mugs for every type of person:

The Jokester
These are the people who only communicate through jokes. They also tend to be the only people that laugh at their own jokes.
